What it teaches
Trace a live vocal signal from microphone to loudspeaker through every stage of the chain.
How it works

The theory
Signal flow is the one mental model every audio job shares: source, gain, shaping, mixing, amplification, output. A microphone's mic-level signal is far too weak to use directly, so the preamp gains it up to line level first. Channel EQ shapes it, aux sends tap it for monitor foldback, faders balance it into buses, the master section sums it, system processing protects it, the power amp drives it, and the loudspeakers turn it back into sound. Break the order and you get noise, feedback, or silence — which is why engineers troubleshoot by walking the chain.
Answer explanations
- Stage 1
- The mic preamp. Mic-level is too weak for anything else — gain comes first.
- Stage 2
- Channel EQ. Tone shaping happens after the signal is at line level.
- Stage 3
- An aux send to the monitor bus — usually pre-fader, so the engineer’s main-mix moves don’t change the singer’s foldback.
- Stage 4
- Master-bus processing (EQ/limiter), then the power amplifier. Processing protects the PA; the amp drives it.
- Stage 5
- The main loudspeakers via speaker cable — the electrical signal becomes sound again.
- The whole chain
- Mic → preamp → EQ → buses → master → processing → power amp → speakers. Gain first, shaping second, mixing third, amplification last.
